Fluoride

Fluoride is an important cavity preventer in both children and adults. Cavities are commonly caused from weakened enamel that has been damaged by plaque releasing acid. Children from 6 months to 16 years old are especially vulnerable to this type of cavity and need enough fluoride to protect their teeth. The fluoride will strengthen the enamel and protect against the acid. In some cases, fluoride has even reversed damage to teeth by adding the minerals back.

Treatments
There are many ways fluoride can be exposed to your teeth to help fight cavities. Some places have fluorinated water that has a safe dose of fluoride added in. If this is not the case in your area e.g. well water, a fluoride pill or drops may be an alternative to this for you. Everyone can benefit from fluoride toothpaste from children to adults, though children who may swallow it should use a small amount. When children are older and responsible for the oral health, a fluoride mouthwash can help expose a larger surface area. Sometimes a higher dose of exposure is recommended and can be given in the office. A fluoride foam or gel can be used to fill a tray that you will bite down on or a fluoride varnish can be directly brushed on instead. Fluoride can help to prevent cavities for a lifelong healthier smile!
